Addiction is a Disease

3 jump rope for heart 021

September is Alcohol and Drug Addiction Month. Drug addiction is a prevalent problem in the United States and even more so in Tennessee.   In 2007-2008, Tennessee was first among all states for non-medical  use of pain relievers among people over the age of 26.   Our drug induced death rate is higher than the national average, and prescription pain relievers are by far the most abused substance.

Most people do not understand addiction.   Many well-meaning people assume drug abusers lack morals or will-power—that they could simply stop if they wanted to. In reality, addiction is a disease that is chronic in nature and quitting takes far more than good intentions.

Don't Get the Summer Time Blues

3-thumbs-up

Just when you think it could not get any hotter, you will get burned badly.  That is what sunburns are all about.  Only five sunburns in a lifetime will double your chance of getting skin cancer, including the worst type - melanoma.  Even if you don’t burn and only tan, the years of accumulation of sun or tanning bed exposure will often result in other types of skin cancer and pre-mature aging. The Environmental Protection Agency states a healthy suntan does not exist.  Any change to someone’s natural skin color is a sign of skin damage and aging.

Preventing a Virus can Prevent a Cancer

hpv vaccine 520

Cervical cancer is a cancer that can be prevented nearly one hundred percent of the time. Over 99% of cervical cancer is actually caused by a viral infection called human papilloma virus (HPV). The HPV virus is common and infects at least 50% of all people who have sex at sometime in their lives. It generally lives in skin cells especially the moist skin in the genital areas.

About 20 million people in the U.S. are infected with HPV. And three fourths of sexually active people between the ages of 15 and 49 have been infected. A woman is more likely to get HPV if she has sexual relations at a early age, has multiple sexual partners, or has a sexual partner that has had multiple partners in the past. There are usually no symptoms when one is infected with HPV. Many times the virus does not cause any disease and the body can clear the HPV infection on its own within two years. Genital warts however are often caused by HPV infection and can have an appearance of raised, flat, pink or flash colored warty growths. These sometimes may not show up for weeks or months after sexual contact.

Sometimes the Summer Just Bites

Tick on a man's fingerSummertime is a great time to be outdoors and enjoy nature.  We try to walk in the woods, work in the yard and tend the garden.  Unfortunately nature likes to enjoy us.   We get attacked by little bloodsuckers called mosquitoes and ticks.
